It’s all about……GA!
We have had a very GalileoAce month.
First, he has been reassessed for autism/Asperger’s. We are to go and see what the results are tomorrow. It has been a longer assessment than I thought it would be. For instance, the “social aspect” of the assessment. We all went for a walk, that is, me, GA and our psychologist. I really wonder what became of that. For me, as I remember it it was a short walk through the office building to where the coffee and tea making facilities were. There were some other people in there and that made it hard for me to interact with my psychologist as those other people were talking. When other people talk, it can be a distraction. So I did what felt comfortable. Programmed the time into the microwave.
GA was also tested for Irlen Syndrome. Also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome.
Here is what he wrote about it:
Well a few weeks ago I had an eye test. I’m long sighted, apparently I have, and I quote, “exceptional long range vision”. So I’d probably wear glasses mostly for reading and computer work. But the optometrist said I could probably end up wearing for everyday use.
And today I had my Irlen test. Irlen? WTF is that you ask? Well Google it!
Nah.. Irlen Syndrome is a visual-processing condition, also known as scotopic sensitivity syndrome. It’s to do with the visual light spectrum (and some not so visual light) that affects your brain’s perceptual processing and can make it difficult to perceive the world appropriately and can lead to learning problems, reading problems, and so forth. They test your span (ability to see peripherial vision), tracking, flow, and other visual qualities. Then they use colour overlays to see if they help, once they establish a base colour. they use colored discs to further refine by adding different colors and filters (including UV and infrared which I didn’t have). In the end I had four discs; turquoise, a shade of brown, a shade of blue, and a shade of purple, which ends up making a kind of purple-like grey colour. Now you might wonder “wouldn’t that make everything look like a kind of purple-like grey colour?” Well, surprisingly no. It makes everything look a bit darker, even when I tried just turquoise (my base colour, surprisingly, considering I choose blue and green as my colours on the net) it looked only slightly blue-green like. It dramatically helped my reading. Previously when I read aloud I stumbled over my words, particularly if the passage was challenging (difficult to pronounce words), but with the filters, reading aloud was a breeze, even with difficult words. It was surprising!
It should be 4 weeks til I get my new coloured glasses and then people will be telling me off for wearing sunglasses inside…Yay…
