Thursday was busy… That is, 7th of June….
First we had a vertical blinds man come and measure our bedroom window for some blinds to be put there. He came an hour early and woke us up. GA let him in while I hid in the laundry!
The man stank of cigarettes, lucky for us he was only in the house for five minutes because that smell was horrible.
Later GA and I went to see Wendy Lawson give a talk. There was about 50 people there. Mostly parents and a few autistic children. GA said he thought we were the only autistic adults there apart from Wendy herself, but he couldn’t tell for sure.
Anyway, Wendy’s talk was really, really good. It was mostly about the different thinking styles between non-autistics and autistics. She also spoke about her history which was very interesting and she answered questions parents had concerning their children.
I think her main point was to get the parents to relay to their children that being autistic is a positive thing even though life can be hard sometimes (as it is for everybody).
Wendy’s Irlen lenses were a lovely colour, bright pink/orange. A lot more interesting than my plain grey ones.
A few videos were played - anhaga’s video was played at the end. I am thinking that the people there liked it, I heard some positive things said. Bits and pieces here and there.
There was one aspect that confused me. About the audience being neurologically typical ”….don’t worry, I won’t hold it against you.” People laughed so it must have been a joke.
I am the sort that could never say things like that about other people. I have been teased a lot but never thought about doing the same to others.
GA wanted to talk to Wendy afterwards but couldn’t think of anything to say. Neither could I. ![]()
I wish I could have thought about everything that happened there but I had to go straight to work. I worked until midnight. When I got home I was shaking due to (I think) it being such a long day.
